Space Camp Hall of Fame Announcement Tomorrow on The Weather Channel

0

Needless to say it has been a busy exciting day for Space Camp’s Hall of Fame with the announcement of two new members both current staff working on ISS projects at JSC.  Check out the announcement at www.Hab1.com including some great audio from the ISS about the announcement.

Late tonight we also learned that another announcement will be made on The Weather Channel tomorrow morning (5/11) between 5:45am and 6:00am (Central).  I’m only speculating but I’m betting it is Stephanie Abrams who has featured Space Camp in her broadcasts.  So far a great group of people heading into the Space Camp Hall of Fame.

Dear Dream Rocket – A Better Plan Is Needed To Cover The Saturn V

6

As reported some time ago there is a project called “The Dream Rocket”  that aims to take artwork designed from all corners of the earth and basically cover the Saturn V mock up (the standing Saturn V) at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.  The project is still in the fundraising and art gathering phases and I have to say the plan is cool yet disturbing.  There is no less than 15 things that could go wrong with this project from rain making the fabric too heavy for the display to stand to piece of artwork falling on to I 565 and causing a crash.  However, the Queen of England has a solution.

Instead of covering the Saturn V in fabric just do something even better, project the artwork onto the Saturn V.  The process is called 3D Architecture Mapping and is a big hit in Europe but is slow to make it to the United States.  The great thing is that it requires no alteration of the static display (no drilling holes and no cranes) and gives a unique way to feature all the artwork involved in the project.

The system could also be used to feature sponsors, special events and even… simulate a Saturn V launch.

While we are on the subject of lighting up the Saturn V I would love to see the center work on finding a sponsor to upgrade the current lighting system to LED and even with a color wheel.

Sprocket Update: Skylab Still Rotting and Strangers In The Night

5

Skylab

Keith Cowing of NASAWatch.com and SpaceRef.com posted an article earlier tonight called “Skylab Is Still Rotting In Huntsville”. During the recent meeting of the ASSEC Executive Committee, Dr. Barnhart mentioned the upcoming 40th anniversary of Skylab and that a plan was being worked to put it back on display. I find the timing of Dr. Barnhart’s remarks and Keith’s post interesting.  Is there something brewing regarding another museum wanting to claim this artifact? I firmly believe that some effort is being made to get the Skylab module back on display but I am curious is there something to this all of sudden interest in the mockup. The only real noticeable change is the 5 rows of trees planted that will one day block the view of the Skylab from the Davidson Center for Space Exploration parking lot.

Strangers in the Night (go down I565 and hang a right at the rocket)

On the same day that Discovery arrived at Dulles something bigger than a breadbox arrived at the Sprocket overnight.  In a very quiet operation NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center brought the Sprocket’s consolation prize for not securing an orbiter… Shuttle Butt.  The technical term is Shuttle C Boat Tail and it is the responsible for housing the orbiter’s main engines.  MSFC also picked up a Multipurpose Logistics Module that had been on display at the center. You can view a picture of the MPLM in transit back to MSFC at http://whnt.com/2012/04/18/nasa-moves-large-equipment-on-interstate-565-overnight/.

The Shuttle C Boat Tail now located at the rear of Pathfinder in Shuttle Park.
